If you have been told that you’re not an immediate candidate for dental implants because you have insufficient jawbone volume or a lack of healthy gum tissue, this is not the end of your journey. You can still qualify for implants; you just need a little extra help. Here at Advanced Family Dentistry, Dr. Taler may recommend a bone graft or soft tissue augmentation to remedy your issues, so take a look below to learn more.
A bone graft is a type of bone regeneration treatment that involves introducing new bone material to the depleted area. By depositing tiny bone granules into the depleted area, the jawbone is triggered to regenerate and grow in volume. This not only gives your implant a substantial foundation to be placed in, but also encourages the process of osseointegration to further cement the implant in your mouth.
Many patients may worry that this bone grafting procedure will take too long, or they will be bedridden for a long time. Not so! A bone graft is typically small and sometimes, if the depleted area is small enough, this procedure can be performed at the same time as the fixture placement, so that the new bone and implant can be solidified together.
A soft tissue augmentation is similar to a bone graft, just using a different material. This treatment is aimed at areas around the missing tooth area that have gum recession or infected gum tissue. Instead of bone granules, though, a sample of synthetic tissue known as Alloderm is placed over the affected gum area.
Similar to a bone graft, this new tissue will bond with the gums and cover up the receded or infected area again. This will help protect your dental implants, as well as cover up any exposed metallic pieces.
Some patients may not understand that these types of treatments are important to the success and longevity of their dental implants. When a tooth is lost, it can be easy for the gum tissue and jawbone around it to start deteriorating. As it deteriorates, it can cause surrounding teeth to become loose, decay, or even fall out.
A bone regeneration treatment and soft tissue augmentations can help repair and reverse the damage by introducing new material into these jawbone and gum areas where the missing tooth once was.
The dental implant also needs jawbone and healthy gum tissue in order to undergo osseointegration and have support. Without it, the dental implant may not osseointegrate at all, causing it to fail, and be costly to fix or do over again.
